Sprint Speeds Up Three More Cities

Sprint today announced that three more metro areas in addition to San Diego can take advantage of faster EV-DO Revision A technology. Subscribers can now get faster download and upload speeds in airports and major business districts of Las Vegas, Milwaukee, and Seattle provided they have a compatible data card. Sprint currently offers three Revision A capable cards as well as a USB modem. Sprint intends to launch Revision A in 21 cities by the year's end. However they have not stated whether entire cities will be covered at that time or simply major business districts in each area.


This is the article backing up the claim in my previous post regarding Nextel & Sprint. Sprint has always been known to have a great data network and verizon was closing in on them fast with their own EVDO network. Now that Sprint has launched EVDO Revision A, they have the upper leg when it comes to using data cards out in the field.

Just a quick tip for those not familiar with the wireless industry...

Definition: EVDO is a high-speed network protocol used for wireless Internet data communications. EVDO supports up to 2.4 Mbps bandwidth using a set of radio frequency channels. The EVDO protocol supports asymmetric communications, allocating a majority of this bandwidth to downloads.
Like cable modem and other broadband Internet technologies, EV-DO is an "always-on" service that does not require establishing dialup network connections.
Some CDMA cell phones support EVDO. These phones may be available for sale in several countries including Sprint and Verizon in the USA.
Additionally, various PCMCIA adapters and external modem hardware exists to enable laptops and handheld devices for EVDO.

EVDO Rev. A-->Rev. A offers fast packet establishment on both the forward and reverse links along with air interface enhancements that reduce latency and improve data rates. In addition to the increase in the maximum downlink (forward link) data rate from 2.4576 Mb/s in Rev. 0 to 3.1 Mb/s, Rev. A has a 12-times improvement in the maximum uplink (reverse link) data rate, from .15 Mb/s to 1.8 Mb/s. EV-DO Rev. A supports low latency services (as low as 50ms) including VoIP and Video Telephony on the same carrier with traditional Internet packet data services.
